Founded The BENTLEY Companies in 1987.
He has owned and operated a number of small and mid-sized companies, spent over 20
years in the corporate environment as a Vice President of W.R. Grace & Co., and as a
Vice President of Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., where he oversaw several dozen merger
and acquisition transactions of both public and private companies. Mr. Smith is
qualified as an expert witness and has taught Merger and Acquisition and Valuation courses
at Golden State University Graduate School of Finance.
Vice President:
Grattan Colvin
A principal in the firm and has overall
marketing responsibility for client companies. He has been involved in mergers and
acquisitions and investment opportunity evaluation activities for 23 years. While at
Alexander & Baldwin, a large, diversified company, he designed and implemented a
successful acquisition/diversification program. Mr. Colvin has also been CEO of a
large container terminal and held a number of senior line and staff corporate roles.
He has taught undergraduate courses in calculus and statistics at the University of
Hawaii. He earned an MBA degree from the University of Hawaii and a BS in
Engineering Science from the University of Virginia.
Director of Valuation:
David Smith
Has been selling small & mid-sized
businesses since 1983. Prior to that, Mr. Smith co-owned and operated a number of
small businesses including movie theaters, and a retail chain of auto supply stores.
He has conducted courses on self-motivation training and sales techniques. As
a member of the International Business Appraisers, he developed the Appraisal Department
for The BENTLEY Companies. Mr. Smith has been with BENTLEY since its founding and
has a key role in the marketing of midmarket companies.
Director of Buyer Development:
John McIntyre
For over 24 years, he has been a
successful owner of several businesses, hotels, commercial real estate partnerships and a
management consulting company. Mr. McIntyre holds a BS from Cornell University and
is a former U.S. Army officer. He specializes in assisting investment groups and
strategic buyers with their acquisition programs.
Marketing Manager:
Ellen M. Mason
Has over 15 years of business experience
in sales, marketing, business management, technical writing and graphic design. She
holds a BS in Business Administration and a Minor in Multimedia from California State
University - Hayward. Ms. Mason is responsible for market research, the development
of BENTLEY client collateral marketing materials, and all BENTLEY marketing materials.
